  • those working in community development or social service sector
  • those interested in community theatre
  • anyone who is looking for a platform for community dialogue
  • social workers/counsellors/mental health professionals who are looking for a therapeutic theatre form

This workshop is a chance for newcomers to dip those toes into the world of Playback Theatre!

Participants can expect to enter a safe and welcoming (and fun!) space for every single one of us. We will affirm one another in our individuality, and find connection through our commonalities.

Playback is an improvisational theatre. Using elements of physical movement, cloth, music, and spoken word, we spontaneously enact stories shared by the audience. It is practiced in 60 countries, and has been used for community bonding, community dialogue, rehabilitation, conflict resolution and reconciliation, education and more.

Participants will play with basic forms used in Playback Theatre, and also experience the playback process where personal stories are shared and enacted spontaneously. Finally, they will explore how these stories reflect the current concerns of the community, and how the process is therapeutic, and can lead to personal and social change.

“absolutely brilliant in his ability to convey knowledge and his lively spirit is great”

– Katy Harris, Children’s Behaviour Therapist

“Michael has a strong sense of presence (when he speaks, others would listen) and experience in Playback Theatre. As an instructor, his facilitation style has clarity, depth and good impart of knowledge.”

Elfarina Zaid, Professional Coach

“This workshop helped me to see theater as beyond a medium of expression. I came here to find a creative voice for myself but I wasn’t prepared to see a new kind of theatre that can affect social change.”

Anjali Vasudevan, Homeopath
